Krishnashtami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna. Krishnashtami is also known as Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Srikrishna Jayanti or Ashtami Rohini. His birth occurred on the Ashtami tithi (eighth day) in the krishna paksha during the Sravana month (August - September). This year(2011) the festival will be celebrated on 22nd August in North India and on 21st August in South Indian states.
Celebrating Krishnashtami with this special prasadam : Ravva Keasari
Ravva Keasari is a easiest sweet and its my all-time favorite. Its a popular sweet in india made in different versions. Some make with milk and some people make with water. Mine is the second version. Many times this sweet is offered as prasadam in the temples.
1 Cup Sooji Ravva / Semilona |
3 Cups Water |
1 Cup Sugar |
2 Tbsp Ghee |
Pinch of Cardomom Pwd |
7 Almonds and Cashews |
- Heat ghee in a pan and fry almonds, cashews and keep them aside.
- In the same pan add ghee and fry ravva on a low-med flame by constant stirring until the ravva turns into golden brown color.
- Add sugar, cardomom pwd to the roasted ravva and fry for a min.
- Slowly add water and yellow color to the ravva by stirring constantly without any lumps.
- Cook until the water is absorbed.
- Lastly add the fried almonds and cashews.
- Serve hot and enjoy !!!!

I avoided Rava Kesari all through my childhood. For no particular reason except that I do not like sweets very much...My mom tried to interest me in it but to no. avsil. Much later when I was travelling on.a Singapore Airlines flight, it was offerred in the lunch,. I did not recognise it as Rava Kesari and tasted it. It tasted so divinely delicious that I looked forward to an encore on my return flight, and to my delight it was there in the lunch pack.
ReplyDeleteRava Kesari is now firmly on my tiny list of favourite sweets.
